National Recycling Week is a moment to reflect on how we deal with the things we've finished with — and to ask whether we're doing enough. Australia generates approximately 76 million tonnes of waste each year, and despite growing recycling infrastructure, much of what we put in the yellow bin still ends up processed offshore or downcycled into lower-grade material. Recycling is valuable, but it has limits. The process of breaking down used materials and remanufacturing them into something new still consumes significant energy and resources. And for materials like glass, the recycling loop often ends in downcycled products rather than the same high-quality containers they started as.

Reuse skips that entire process. A container that is cleaned, refilled, and returned to use retains its quality, requires a fraction of the energy, and stays out of the waste stream entirely. Across thousands of containers, that adds up to meaningful volume — and it's a model that works precisely because it prioritises reuse over disposal. UpCandle: Containers with a Community Purpose

Some of our returned containers take a different path. Through our UpCandle program, used containers are refilled and donated to domestic violence shelters and community organisations across Australia. To date, more than 4,200 candles have been donated and over 5,500 containers diverted from landfill — representing approximately 5.5 tonnes of glass saved.

UpCandle is part of our wider commitment to social impact: the belief that a sustainable business model and meaningful community contribution aren't separate goals. The Broader Recycling Ecosystem We're Part Of

CandleXchange also participates in the wider recycling ecosystem through partnerships with organisations finding innovative solutions for hard-to-recycle materials.

Banish runs a recycling and disposal program for household items that typically can't go in the kerb-side bin — blister packs, toothpaste tubes, bread tags, and more. We collaborate with Banish on educational workshops and activations in the workplace, giving teams practical tools to reduce what they send to landfill.

ReSmart offers doorstep collection for hard-to-recycle items and connects them with appropriate recycling partners. Through this partnership, used candle containers collected by ReSmart can be channelled into our UpCandle program — giving them both an environmental and a community second life.

W.I.S.E focuses on community recycling programs that reward participants with savings on sustainable products, including CandleXchange candles. Their model reinforces the same philosophy we believe in: that sustainable choices should be accessible and rewarded, not just aspirational.
