Why the First Burn Matters: How to Avoid Candle Tunnelling

There's a particular kind of frustration that comes with a tunnelled candle. You light it, it smells beautiful — and then, burn by burn, it carves a narrow hole straight down the centre while a thick ring of perfectly good wax sits untouched around the edges, slowly hardening and going nowhere. By the end, you've used maybe half the candle you paid for.
Tunnelling is one of the most common candle problems, and it's almost entirely preventable. Here's why it happens and exactly what to do about it.
What Is Candle Tunnelling?
Tunnelling is what happens when a candle burns straight down the middle rather than melting evenly across the full surface. It creates a deep well around the wick, leaving a ring of wax clinging to the inside walls of the container that the flame can never reach.
Soy wax is particularly prone to tunnelling because it has what's sometimes called wax memory. On the very first burn, soy wax sets a pattern that it tends to follow on every subsequent burn. If the first melt pool doesn't reach the edge of the container, the wax will keep burning to roughly the same diameter — and that tunnel will deepen with every use.
Why Tunnelling Happens
The First Burn Was Cut Short
This is the most common cause. If you extinguish a soy candle before the wax has melted all the way to the edges — even once — you've set a memory that's difficult to undo. The candle will continue to burn to that same diameter on every future burn.
The Wick Is Too Small
A wick that's too narrow for the container simply can't generate enough heat to melt wax to the edges. This is usually a manufacturing issue rather than anything you've done — but if you notice tunnelling from the very first burn despite doing everything right, the wick size may be the cause.
Burning for Too Short a Time
Even after a good first burn, consistently burning your candle for only 20 or 30 minutes doesn't give the melt pool time to reach the edges. Short burns compound over time and can still lead to tunnelling, even if the first burn went well.
Burning in a Drafty Spot
A draught — from an open window, a fan, or an air vent nearby — causes the flame to flicker and burn unevenly. One side of the container gets more heat than the other, the melt pool stays uneven, and tunnelling follows.
How to Prevent Tunnelling
Get the First Burn Right
This is the single most important thing you can do. The first time you light a new candle, allow it to burn until the entire surface has melted — a full, edge-to-edge melt pool with no solid wax remaining on the top. For a standard CandleXchange container, this typically takes two to three hours.
Don't rush it. Don't blow it out when you leave the room if the melt pool hasn't reached the edges yet. Set aside the time, and your candle will reward you with even burns from that point on. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
Always trim the wick to 5–10mm before lighting. A long wick burns too hot and too fast — the flame goes tall rather than wide, and the melt pool stays narrow. A trimmed wick burns at the right temperature to melt the wax evenly to the edges.
You can use scissors, nail clippers, or a dedicated wick trimmer. The goal is a clean, even cut with no fraying. Remove any trimmed wick debris from the container before lighting.
Allow Each Burn to Form a Full Melt Pool
After the first burn, aim for a minimum of one hour each time you light the candle — and ideally until you can see the melt pool reaching the edges again. The general guideline is approximately one hour of burn time for every 2.5cm of container diameter.
Keep It Away From Drafts
Find a spot away from open windows, ceiling fans, air conditioning vents, and doorways. A steady flame means even heat distribution and a much better chance of an even melt pool.
What to Do If Your Candle Has Already Tunnelled
If tunnelling has already started, it's not always too late to correct it.
The foil trick: Wrap a piece of aluminium foil around the top rim of the container, leaving an opening over the wick. The foil traps heat and directs it inward, helping the wax melt more evenly across the full surface. Burn for a few hours and check the progress.
The hair dryer method: Use a hair dryer on a low heat setting to gently melt the uneven surface wax before lighting. Once the top layer is level, light the candle and allow it to burn to a full melt pool.
These methods work best when tunnelling is mild to moderate. A severely tunnelled candle may not fully recover, but both techniques can meaningfully extend its useful life.
