Scent Savvy: A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Candle Fragrance

By Hayley Clarke, CandleXchange

Choosing a candle fragrance should feel like the easy part. You know what you like to smell — right? And yet most of us have stood in a shop (or scrolled through an online store) and felt genuinely stuck. Too many options, too little guidance.

The trick is to stop thinking about individual scents and start thinking in fragrance families. Once you understand the handful of categories that candle fragrances fall into — and what each one does to a room and a mood — the whole thing becomes a lot clearer.

The Three Fragrance Families

Almost every candle fragrance fits within one of three broad families: fresh and citrus, floral, or warm and earthy. Most people find they gravitate naturally toward one end of this spectrum — and once you know which one is yours, choosing gets much easier.

Fresh & Citrus

Fresh and citrus fragrances are bright, clean and energising. They make spaces feel lighter and more open, and they're excellent at cutting through lingering odours — which is why they work so well in kitchens, bathrooms and home offices. If you tend to feel lifted and alert by sharp, clean scents, this is your family.

In the CandleXchange range:

  • Lemongrass: Bright, citrusy and grounding. One of our most-reached-for scents, for good reason.
  • Coconut & Lime: Tropical freshness with a soft, creamy edge that stops it feeling clinical.
  • Mandarin, Lime & Basil: Citrus-forward with a herbal note that adds real sophistication.
  • Ocean Breeze: Clean and airy — the one that makes any room feel bigger.
  • Pear & Guava: A softer, fruitier take on fresh. Playful without being sweet.

Floral

Floral fragrances are warmer and more emotional. They create feelings of comfort and calm — the scents you reach for when you want a space to feel welcoming, or when you need to genuinely unwind after a long day.

  • Lavender & Rose: Our most popular blend. Lavender for calm, rose for warmth — both from pure essential oils. A classic for the bedroom or bathroom.
  • Australian Florals: Delicate native florals that feel distinctly Australian rather than generic. Soft and beautifully understated.
  • Gardenia: Lush, white-floral richness. The closest thing to a spa in candle form.

Warm & Earthy

Warm and earthy fragrances use base notes — wood, resin, native botanicals — that linger longer and give a room a sense of depth and groundedness. These are your winter candles, your meditation candles, your "this room actually feels like home" candles.

  • Sandalwood, Orange & Vanilla: Warm sandalwood base, citrus brightness, a vanilla finish. Rich, complex and genuinely versatile.
  • Australian Bush: Eucalyptus and native botanicals. Fresh in a very different way — more outdoorsy and earthy than citrus-clean.

Match Scent to Mood (Not Just Room)

The room you're burning a candle in matters — we have a full guide to matching scents by room if that's what you're after. But often the more useful question is: how do I want to feel?

  • Calm and less anxious: Reach for floral or warm/earthy. Lavender & Rose and Sandalwood, Orange & Vanilla are both excellent here.
  • Alert and focused: Fresh or citrus. Lemongrass and Mandarin, Lime & Basil are reliable choices for home office sessions.
  • Warm and welcoming for guests: Something that bridges fresh and warm — Sandalwood, Orange & Vanilla has a citrus lift that keeps it from feeling heavy.
  • Uplifted and refreshed: Ocean Breeze or Coconut & Lime — the most instantly mood-lifting options in the range.

Why What's in the Candle Matters

This is the part most candle guides skip over — but it's important. The fragrance family tells you how a scent will feel. The ingredients tell you whether you can actually trust it.

CandleXchange candles are made with natural oils — a blend of essential oils and naturally-derived fragrance oils — in a natural soy wax base. That means no artificial synthetic chemicals. The key distinction worth knowing when shopping for candles is not "essential oil vs fragrance oil," but natural vs synthetic. Mass-market candles often use fully artificial synthetic fragrance compounds that can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when burned, which may irritate the respiratory system over time. Natural oils — whether essential or naturally-derived fragrance blends — are a cleaner choice. Learn more about our approach to sustainability and ingredients.

When shopping anywhere, look for "natural fragrance oils" or "essential oils" on the label. If a candle just says "fragrance" with no further detail, it's likely synthetic.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Try before you commit. We're based in Brookvale and welcome you to come in and smell any of our fragrances in person before buying. Fragrance is deeply personal — trust your first reaction to a scent, it's usually right.
  • Consider the size of your space. Lighter, fresh fragrances work in any size room. Richer, warmer scents are better in larger or well-ventilated spaces — they can be overpowering in a small room.
  • Try layering. If you can't decide between two fragrances, try burning them in different areas of the same space — the scents will blend naturally without competing. Lemongrass and Sandalwood, Orange & Vanilla work particularly well together.
  • Store properly. Keep the lid on and store away from direct sunlight and heat. In Australian summers especially, soy wax can soften in storage if left in the wrong spot. For full candle care guidance, visit our Candle Care page.

Still not sure? Browse all our soy candles — the collection is organised by fragrance so you can shop by family and find your fit. And if you love a scent, you can keep it going — bring your empty jar back through our Return & Swap program and we'll refill it with the same fragrance, no new packaging needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which candle fragrance is right for me?

Start with the fragrance family that matches how you want to feel. Fresh and citrus scents are energising and uplifting. Florals are calming and comforting. Warm and earthy fragrances are grounding and rich. Once you know your family, narrowing it down to a specific scent is much easier. When in doubt, trust your gut reaction — fragrance preference is largely instinctive.

Is it better to choose a candle with essential oils or fragrance oils?

The more important distinction is natural vs synthetic, not essential oil vs fragrance oil. Natural fragrance oils (derived from natural sources) and essential oils are both cleaner choices than fully synthetic fragrance compounds, which can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when burned. CandleXchange uses natural oils — a blend of essential oils and naturally-derived fragrance oils — so there are no artificial synthetic chemicals in the mix.

Can you burn two different candle fragrances at the same time?

Yes — this is called scent layering, and it can work beautifully if you choose complementary fragrances. Fresh/citrus scents pair well with warm/earthy ones for balance. Avoid mixing two very strong or very similar scents, as they can compete rather than complement. Try burning each candle in a different area of the same open-plan space and let the scents drift together naturally.
