UpCandle: How Your Candle Container Helps Domestic Violence Survivors
By Karen Platt, Co-Founder, CandleXchange
When a candle burns down to the wick, most people throw the container away. It's a reasonable assumption — the candle is finished, so the container must be too. But glass doesn't degrade, and landfill isn't an ending, it's just a delay. At CandleXchange, we asked: what if the container wasn't the end of the story?
The answer became two programs — Return & Swap and UpCandle — that have changed the way we think about what a candle can do, long after the last burn.
The CandleXchange Approach to Circular Economy
Most candle companies sell candles. We sell candles and take responsibility for what happens when they're finished. Our glass containers are built to be reused — not once, not twice, but indefinitely. Clean glass is one of the most reusable materials on earth, and a CandleXchange container cleaned and refilled is functionally identical to a new one.
Our sustainability approach starts with the wax (100% natural soy, not petroleum-based paraffin), extends through the fragrance (natural oils, not synthetic compounds), and carries all the way through to what we do when the candle is done. The container is part of the product — and part of the promise.
Return & Swap: Closing the Loop on Every Container
The Return & Swap program is our take-back initiative for finished candle containers. Here's how it works:
- When your candle burns down, bring the clean empty container back to us — free return shipping is included with every CandleXchange order.
- We clean and sanitise the container and refill it with fresh 100% natural soy wax.
- You receive 30% off your next candle purchase as a thank you for keeping the container in circulation.
The result: one less container in landfill, one less container manufactured from scratch, and a meaningful saving for you. It's a straightforward exchange that makes the sustainable choice the easy one.
UpCandle: A Second Life with Purpose
UpCandle goes a step further. It's the program that turned a simple reuse idea into something genuinely meaningful.
When domestic violence survivors leave a crisis shelter and move into a new home, they often arrive with almost nothing. Furniture, kitchenware, bedding — the everyday objects that make a house feel like a home — have to be accumulated from scratch. It's a vulnerable moment: hopeful, but fragile.
UpCandle addresses that moment in a small but tangible way. We collect gently used candle containers, refill them with 100% natural soy wax, and donate them to charities that support survivors as they transition into permanent housing. A candle in a new home isn't just a nice-to-have. It's warmth. It's fragrance. It's the feeling that someone thought of you.

How to Participate
Both programs start with the same simple step: hang on to your finished container.
To participate in Return & Swap
Make sure the container is clean — a quick rinse with hot water removes residual wax. Use the free return shipping label included with every CandleXchange order, or drop it into our Brookvale store. Your 30% discount code will follow. Full details on our Return & Swap page.
To donate through UpCandle
Drop off your clean, good-quality candle containers at our store — we accept any brand, not just CandleXchange. Our team inspects, cleans, and refills each container with fresh soy wax before donating to our charity partners. Alternatively, you can donate an UpCandle directly — we'll handle the rest.
Why It Matters Beyond the Container
Australia generates substantial packaging waste from the candle and home fragrance industry — glass and metal containers that, in most cases, could simply be cleaned and reused. Both Return & Swap and UpCandle are our practical response to that reality.
But UpCandle in particular has shown us that sustainability and social impact aren't separate things. Reducing landfill and supporting people rebuilding their lives are the same act, seen from two angles. The container that would have gone into a bin becomes something that sits on a mantelpiece in someone's first safe home.

Frequently Asked Questions
What condition do containers need to be in for Return & Swap or UpCandle?
Clean and intact — no chips, cracks, or significant damage. A quick hot water rinse is usually enough to remove remaining wax. For UpCandle donations, we accept any brand of candle container, not just CandleXchange. Our team inspects and cleans all containers before refilling.
How is UpCandle different from Return & Swap?
Return & Swap is a circular economy program: you return your container, receive a 30% discount, and the container gets refilled and resold. UpCandle is a charitable program: donated containers are refilled and given to domestic violence survivors moving into new homes — not resold. You can participate in both, or choose the one that resonates most with you.
Can I participate if I don't live near the Brookvale store?
Yes. Return & Swap includes free return shipping with every CandleXchange order. For UpCandle donations, get in touch via the UpCandle page to discuss postal options, or ask about partner drop-off locations near you.
