How to Make Your Soy Candle Last Longer: A Complete Care Guide

By Hayley Clarke, CandleXchange

A good soy candle is an investment — in your home, your mood, and (with CandleXchange) your community. But even the best candle will underperform if it's not cared for properly. The good news? Soy candle care is simple once you know the rules. Follow these tips and you'll get every last hour of fragrance from every candle you burn.

1. The First Burn Is Everything

This is the single most important tip, and the one most people skip. Soy wax has a memory — wherever the wax melts to on the first burn is where it will melt to on every subsequent burn. If you only burn your candle for 20 minutes on day one, you'll create a narrow tunnel that deepens with every use, wasting wax and shortening your candle's life significantly.

The fix: on your very first burn, let the candle go until the melted wax reaches the full edge of the container. Here are our recommended minimum first burn times by candle size:

  • 300g candle: minimum 45 minutes
  • 400g candle: minimum 1.5 hours
  • 1.5kg candle: minimum 2.5 hours

Get the first burn right and you'll avoid tunnelling entirely.

2. Trim Your Wick Every Single Time

Before every burn — not just the first — trim the wick to approximately 5mm. A wick that's too long creates a larger, less controlled flame that burns through wax faster, produces more soot, and can cause the wick to "mushroom" (develop a black, carbon-heavy tip that smokes and flickers).

A clean 5mm wick means a steady flame, a longer burn time, and less black residue on the inside of your container. Our wick trimmer is designed to make this easy — it reaches into the container cleanly and catches the trimmed end so it doesn't fall into the wax.

3. Keep Burns Between 1 and 4 Hours

Soy candles are designed to burn within a specific time window per session. Too short, and you don't get a full melt pool (back to the tunnelling problem). Too long, and the wick can become oversaturated, the flame can grow too large, and the container can overheat.

The sweet spot for all CandleXchange candles is 1 to 4 hours per burn session. Never burn longer than 4 hours at a time — always extinguish, let the candle cool completely, re-trim the wick, and then relight.

When used within these guidelines, you can expect:

  • 300g candle: 55–60 hours total burn time
  • 400g candle: 65–80 hours total burn time
  • 1.5kg candle: 120–160 hours total burn time

4. Keep the Wax Pool Clear

After each burn, check the wax pool before it hardens and remove any wick trimmings, match debris, or dust that may have fallen in. Foreign material in the wax pool can clog the wick, cause uneven burning, and create excess soot on your next burn.

If there's black residue on the inside of the container, a gentle wipe with a damp cloth once the candle has cooled will keep things clean and ensure the glass stays clear.

5. Store Candles Away from Heat and Light

In Australia, this matters more than it does most places. Direct sunlight will fade the colour of your candle, degrade the essential oils in the fragrance, and can soften or even melt soy wax if the room gets hot enough. Summer in a car or a west-facing room can ruin a candle quickly.

Store your candles in a cool, dry spot away from direct sun — a drawer, a cupboard, or a shaded shelf is ideal. Always keep the lid on when not in use to protect the fragrance and keep dust out of the wax.

6. Know When to Stop — and What to Do Next

Stop burning your candle when there is approximately 1cm of wax remaining in the container. Burning beyond this point risks overheating the container, which can cause the glass to crack.

Once you're done, you have options. If you have a CandleXchange candle, simply clean out the jar and bring it back through our Return & Swap program — we'll refill it with a new fragrance of your choice. No new packaging, no waste.

Don't have a CandleXchange container? Clean good-quality containers can be donated to our UpCandle program, where they're refilled and given to domestic violence survivors and refugees moving into new homes.

To clean a candle jar: pop it in the freezer for 20 minutes, then lever out the hardened wax with a butter knife. Finish with hot soapy water. Dispose of wax in the bin — never down the drain.

Quick Troubleshooting

Even with good habits, things sometimes go wrong. Here's how to fix the most common issues:

  • Tunnelling: caused by a short first burn. On future burns, trim the wick and allow a full melt pool — over several sessions, the tunnel should self-correct.
  • Black soot or smoking: trim the wick to 5mm before every burn and keep sessions under 4 hours.
  • Mushroom wick (black, bulb-shaped tip): always trim before relighting, avoid drafts, and keep burns within the 1–4 hour window.
  • Wax pulling away from the glass: completely normal for clear-glass containers and doesn't affect burn quality.
  • Weak scent throw: make sure the room isn't too large for the candle size, and avoid burning near open windows or fans that disperse the fragrance before you can enjoy it.

The Bottom Line

Three habits cover most of it: nail the first burn, trim the wick every time, and keep sessions to 1–4 hours. Do those three things and your soy candle will last as long as it's designed to — and smell great all the way through.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should you burn a soy candle at a time?

Between 1 and 4 hours per session. Burning for less than an hour on the first burn risks tunnelling; burning for more than 4 hours can cause the wick to overheat and the container to get too hot.

Why is my soy candle tunnelling?

Tunnelling happens when the first burn wasn't long enough to create a full melt pool across the surface. Soy wax has a memory, so it only melts as wide as it did the first time. Always follow the minimum first burn times: 45 minutes for 300g, 1.5 hours for 400g, and 2.5 hours for 1.5kg candles.

How do I clean a candle jar to reuse it?

Place the jar in the freezer for about 20 minutes, then lever out the hardened wax with a butter knife. Wipe clean and finish with hot soapy water. Put the wax in the bin — not down the drain. Then bring it back to CandleXchange for a refill through our Return & Swap program.

Why does my soy candle produce black soot?

Usually a wick that hasn't been trimmed. Trim to approximately 5mm before every burn, avoid drafts while burning, and keep sessions under 4 hours. If you're seeing heavy soot consistently, your wick may need replacing.
